The floors that went through the flood
Bowness was among the hardest hit communities when the Bow overtopped in June 2013, and hundreds of houses there had water through the main floor. A lot of that hardwood was dried and put back under enormous time pressure, which was the right call then and left a specific set of problems behind now. Boards that were sanded flat before they had finished drying came back crowned. Boards that dried unevenly gapped and never fully closed. Sections replaced in a hurry sit at a slightly different height or colour from the wood around them.
More than a decade on, most of those floors are stable and refinishable. What they need first is an honest read on whether the movement has stopped. We meter moisture across the floor and look at how the boards sit against each other before we recommend anything, because a floor that is still moving is a floor that will undo a refinish.
Bungalow oak, and what is under the carpet
Away from the water damage, Bowness is mostly 1950s and 1960s bungalows with the same oak strip flooring as the rest of that era, and the same story of carpet going down over it in the 1980s.
